The US proposal to end the war has allies in Ukraine worried.

A US plan to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine "will require additional work," according to Ukraine's allies in Europe, Canada, and Japan.

They stated in a statement that the plan had components "essential for a just and lasting peace," but they raised issues with border modifications and restrictions on Ukraine's armed forces.

On Sunday, security officials from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the United States, and Ukraine will gather in Geneva, Switzerland, for additional discussions.

Prior to this, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Ukraine will confront "one of the most difficult moments in our history" due to pressure from the US to approve the plan, the specifics of which have been leaked and are seen to be advantageous to Moscow.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the 28-point plan might serve as the "basis" for a settlement, US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine till November 27 to approve it.

The leaders of Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, Germany, and Norway issued a unified declaration on Saturday during the G20 summit in South Africa. Among the signatories were two senior EU officials.

"We therefore believe that the draft is a basis which will require additional work," the statement stated. We are prepared to participate in order to guarantee the sustainability of future peace. We firmly believe that borders cannot be altered by coercion.

"We are also concerned by the proposed limitations on Ukraine's armed forces, which would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attack."

It stated that "The implementation of elements relating to the European Union and relating to Nato would need the consent of EU and Nato members respectively" .

The widely reported US peace plan calls for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the portion of the eastern Donetsk region that they presently control, as well as de facto Russian rule of Donetsk, the neighbouring Luhansk region, and the southern Crimea peninsula that Russia invaded in 2014.

Freezing the borders of the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine following the existing war lines is another part of the strategy. Russia occupies a portion of both areas.

Additionally, the US draft would restrict Ukraine's military to 600,000 soldiers, with European fighter jets based in Poland, a neighbour.

The proposal calls for "reliable security guarantees" for Kyiv, but no specifics have been provided. According to the memo, "it is expected" that NATO would not continue to grow and that Russia will not invade its neighbours.

Additionally, the plan calls for Russia to be "reintegrated into the global economy" by inviting it to rejoin the G7 group of the world's most powerful nations, so re-establishing the G8, and by relaxing sanctions.
