A pregnant woman leaped from the ninth story

in the time of her death, Emma Atkinson, 38, was in Leeds visiting her father in a block of apartments.

 According to an inquiry, a heavily pregnant woman did not plan to commit suicide when she leaped from the ninth floor of a tower building.

On October 22, 2024, Emma Atkinson, 38, went out the window of an apartment in Shakespeare Towers in Leeds' Burmantofts neighborhood.

After being born in the hospital, her daughter has recovered "unexpectedly and much welcomed."

Assistant coroner Naomi McLoughlin recorded a narrative verdict, stating that although there was insufficient evidence to support suicide, the act of climbing out of the window was intentional.

At before 10:20 BST that morning, Emma—who had five children—climbed out of her father's apartment window.

Her father, David Atkinson, claimed that she had been perched on a chair by the window in his living room.Emma perched on the back of the chair and requested cigarets. He told Wakefield Coroner's Court, "She started smoking and asked how to open the window."

In a written statement to the court, Emma told her father she was "just getting some air" and had taken off the safety catches before declaring "I'm off" as she exited the window.

The court heard that paramedics were contacted and attempted to save the infant by performing CPR on Emma despite her serious injuries. Hospital professionals classified her injuries, which included several severe blunt force traumas, as not survivable.

Emma arrived at the hospital at 10:43 when paramedics were still administering CPR.

In less than a minute, the baby was delivered via C-section.

The coroner heard testimony regarding Emma's prior suicide attempts, including an overdose, during the inquiry.

Her relatives told the court that she "loved her kids" despite the fact that she had self-harmed in the past and had told physicians that she might have a mental illness.

The coroner was informed that Emma had skipped a court appearance due to a shoplifting allegation in the days before to her passing.Det Con Emily Parnham of West Yorkshire Police testified that David Atkinson had informed her that Emma was "stressed" about the possibility of going to jail.

Her relatives noted that she was also thrilled about her daughter's upcoming delivery and her grandchild's gender announcement.

Demi, her daughter, added that she did not believe her mother would have committed suicide, saying, "She was an absolutely incredible mum."

"She was not just a good mother, but a fantastic mother, and everything she did was for her children," stated David Atkinson. The family doesn't understand why she did what she did, and they are all naturally distraught."
